Nintendo Confirms New Console Reveal in June, Ending Switch Era After Seven Glorious Years

After months of rumors and speculation, Nintendo has officially confirmed that it will reveal its next-generation console in June 2024, signaling the end of the Nintendo Switch’s historic seven-year run. The announcement came via a tweet from Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa, who thanked players for their continued support and confirmed that the new hardware will be unveiled in a dedicated presentation this summer.

“As announced in our financial results, we will make an announcement about our next-generation console within this fiscal year. We will be holding a Nintendo Direct in June—not about the next-gen system—but please stay tuned for further updates,” Furukawa wrote. While June’s Nintendo Direct will focus on upcoming games for the current Switch lineup, fans are eager for more details from the separate, yet-to-be-dated hardware reveal.

The acknowledgment ends one of the company’s longest stretches without announcing new hardware. The Nintendo Switch first launched in March 2017 and has sold over 139 million units worldwide, becoming Nintendo’s best-selling home console to date. Blending handheld and docked play, the Switch won over gamers with its hybrid versatility and iconic titles like *The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild*, *Animal Crossing: New Horizons*, and *Super Mario Odyssey*.

Speculation about the new console—commonly referred to as “Switch 2” or “Super Switch” by fans—has dominated gaming forums and industry discourse for over a year. Leaks and dev kit rumors suggest backward compatibility, enhanced graphics capabilities, and a focus on preserving the hybridity that made the Switch so successful.

Industry analysts see the timing as strategic. With competitors Sony and Microsoft already deep into their current-gen cycles, Nintendo’s fresh hardware could reset the playing field just as several major franchises are due for sequels.

While we’ll have to wait a bit longer for exact specs and a release date, Nintendo’s confirmation finally brings clarity—and excitement—for what’s next. One era ends, and another begins. And if history is anything to go by, Nintendo’s next move will be anything but predictable.
