Cyberpunk 2077’s Final Update Marks End of an Era as CD Projekt Red Shifts Focus to New Witcher Title

CD Projekt Red has officially released the final update for Cyberpunk 2077, closing the book on one of the most tumultuous yet ultimately redemptive journeys in modern gaming history. Update 2.12, which rolled out earlier today, brings a final set of bug fixes and performance tweaks to both console and PC versions of the game. With its release, CDPR confirms that development resources will now fully pivot toward the studio’s next major project: the upcoming entry in The Witcher franchise, currently in early production under the codename “Polaris.”

Cyberpunk 2077 launched in December 2020 to a whirlwind of hype and controversy, with technical issues and missing features plaguing early versions—especially on last-gen consoles. What followed was a testament to both CDPR’s resilience and the player community’s persistent hope. Over the past three years, the developer has issued numerous patches, quality-of-life improvements, and a well-received expansion, Phantom Liberty, which reintroduced confidence in the franchise.

Update 2.12 doesn’t add new content but addresses critical bugs affecting gameplay stability, particularly in the wake of the new REDmod tools for modders. It also finalizes balance and AI tweaks introduced in earlier updates. “This marks the conclusion of major development for Cyberpunk 2077,” CD Projekt Red stated in a brief announcement. “We’re incredibly thankful to our players for sticking with us. Now, our full attention turns toward the future.”

That future is Polaris, the next chapter in the revered Witcher series. First teased back in 2022, Polaris is said to be the start of a new Witcher saga, built on Unreal Engine 5 rather than CDPR’s proprietary REDengine. While details remain tightly under wraps, fans are already speculating on whether Geralt, Ciri, or entirely new protagonists will take the spotlight.

As Cyberpunk 2077 steps into history as both cautionary tale and redemption story, all eyes now turn toward CD Projekt Red’s next adventure in the Continent. If their recent comeback is any indication, Polaris could be a return to the studio’s roots—and a chance to redefine the RPG genre once again.
