Bethesda has officially announced that Starfield’s highly anticipated expansion, Shattered Space, will launch in fall 2024. Revealed during today’s Xbox Games Showcase, the new story content brings fresh narrative arcs, locations, gear, and powers, promising to expand the game’s universe in meaningful new ways. Fans of Bethesda’s epic space RPG won’t have to wait too long to get a taste of what’s to come, though—the base game is receiving a major update this month that introduces a slew of quality-of-life features and new gameplay options.
Shattered Space marks the first major DLC for Starfield since its release in September 2023. While plot details remain scarce, Bethesda teased glimpses of cosmic horror and alien ruins on a mysterious new planet. The studio also confirmed that the expansion will include new quests, characters, enemy factions, and a variety of exclusive gear pieces and abilities, pushing players deeper into the sci-fi mystery backbone of the original storyline.
That’s not all Bethesda had in store today. Alongside the expansion reveal, the team outlined a June update for Starfield’s base game that includes a new bounty hunting system, updated mission boards, and immersive ship interior customization. Players will now be able to pursue dynamic bounty missions across various star systems, with rewards and consequences depending on their choices. The ship builder also receives an overhaul, letting players outfit their interiors with greater aesthetic and functional control, bringing more personality and utility to their spacecraft.
The update will also continue Bethesda’s ongoing bug fixes and performance improvements, further polishing gameplay for both high-end PCs and consoles. Since launch, Starfield has received periodic updates, but this marks the first major content step forward, leading into what could be a substantial second wind for the spacefaring RPG.
With Shattered Space on the horizon and June’s gameplay enhancements just around the corner, Bethesda seems committed to proving that Starfield’s journey is far from over. Whether you’re a seasoned explorer or a newcomer preparing to take your first warp jump, 2024 looks like Starfield’s most promising chapter yet.
