FromSoftware has finally lifted the shroud over the long-anticipated Elden Ring expansion, *Shadow of the Erdtree*. After more than a year of radio silence following its initial tease in February 2023, today’s reveal treated fans to a stunning new trailer and an official release date: June 21, 2024.
The trailer, clocking in at nearly four minutes, delivers everything players could want—and more. A dark, ethereal realm seemingly outside the Lands Between sets the stage for a new journey steeped in mystery, danger, and the signature melancholy world-building FromSoftware is known for. The footage showcases brand new environments, haunting enemy types, soaring boss encounters, and a heavy emphasis on the journey of Miquella, one of the most enigmatic characters in the original game.
Though details remain deliberately cryptic, director Hidetaka Miyazaki confirmed in a developer briefing that *Shadow of the Erdtree* will be the “largest expansion FromSoftware has ever created.” New weapons, armor, and magic schools are on the menu, as well as deeper customization systems and multiple branching narrative paths.
The expansion picks up the narrative threads left behind in Elden Ring’s sprawling base game. Miquella, brother to Malenia and once considered a dormant force, appears to take center stage. The trailer hints at a corrupted evolution of his “unalloyed” ideals, presenting tantalizing questions about faith, rot, and legacy in the process.
Fromsoft also confirmed that *Shadow of the Erdtree* will be a paid DLC, priced at $39.99, and will be available across all platforms: PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Pre-orders begin today and come bundled with exclusive digital art and a soundtrack preview.
With the original *Elden Ring* having sold over 20 million copies and sweeping nearly every Game of the Year honor in 2022, anticipation for this expansion is sky-high. Judging by today’s trailer, FromSoftware is not only meeting expectations—they’re about to redefine them.
June can’t come fast enough.
