EA Confirms Next Battlefield Will Feature a Full Single-Player Campaign, Developed by Halo Veteran

EA has officially confirmed what many fans of the franchise have been hoping for: the next Battlefield title will include a full-fledged single-player campaign. After the lukewarm reception of Battlefield 2042, which lacked a traditional campaign, this announcement marks a return to roots for the storied franchise — and a promise to reinvest in narrative-driven gameplay.

The upcoming installment in the Battlefield series is being spearheaded by Marcus Lehto, a crucial creative force behind the original Halo trilogy. Lehto, who now leads Ridgeline Games — a new EA studio focused exclusively on story development within the Battlefield universe — brings a pedigree of first-person shooter storytelling that’s hard to match. With credits that include Master Chief’s origin and the iconic Halo: Combat Evolved, fans are expecting a campaign with emotional weight and memorable characters.

Lehto’s studio is tasked specifically with crafting the narrative experience, while DICE, the traditional stewards of Battlefield’s multiplayer, will remain focused on refining the large-scale, cinematic multiplayer battles the series is known for. EA seems determined to follow a more collaborative, cross-studio approach for this title. Criterion and Ripple Effect are also contributing, creating what publisher Electronic Arts describes as a “unified Battlefield universe.”

“Players want more from Battlefield. That means not just moments of chaos in multiplayer, but emotionally resonant storytelling with characters they care about,” said Vince Zampella, head of the Battlefield franchise at EA.

While details remain under wraps, the pivot back toward narrative campaigns is being celebrated by longtime fans. The announcement also suggests EA is listening to criticism—notably the backlash from skipping a campaign in Battlefield 2042 and the fragmented vision that hurt its launch.

With a veteran like Lehto at the helm and a renewed emphasis on immersive storytelling, the next Battlefield could mark a resurgence for the franchise. Though no release window has been confirmed, anticipation is already building as fans await a trailer and further details, likely later this year. For now, it’s safe to say the battlefield is about to get a whole lot more personal.
