In a surprise that has fans of classic racers buzzing, Nintendo has announced and immediately released a remastered version of ‘F-Zero GX’ exclusively for the Nintendo Switch. Even more exciting is that the company brought back original producer Toshihiro Nagoshi—who went on to create the Yakuza series—to lead the remastering efforts alongside a small team of developers from the original GameCube title.
Originally launched in 2003, ‘F-Zero GX’ is widely considered one of the greatest futuristic racing games ever made, known for its breakneck speed, adrenaline-fueled tracks, and punishing difficulty. The remaster, now titled ‘F-Zero GX Remastered,’ features updated HD visuals, reworked sound design, and modernized controls tuned for both Joy-Con and Pro Controller compatibility. While staying true to its original gameplay mechanics, the remaster also includes optional assist modes, making it more accessible for newcomers while preserving its reputation for high-skill racing.
Nintendo quietly dropped the announcement during an impromptu Nintendo Direct Mini today. “We know fans have wanted this for years,” said Shinya Takahashi, Nintendo’s General Manager of Entertainment Planning & Development, during the stream. “Our goal was to honor the legacy while using today’s technology to elevate the experience.”
Perhaps the most surprising aspect is the return of Toshihiro Nagoshi, who had previously departed Sega in 2021 and launched his own studio. “F-Zero GX was my first brush with fast-paced storytelling through gameplay,” Nagoshi said in a short video segment. “I’m thrilled to revisit it with fresh eyes and tools.”
Online leaderboards and a new time trial mode have also been added, giving longtime fans new ways to test their mettle. Although there’s no word yet on a full-fledged sequel to the long-dormant series, this release signals hope that Nintendo is finally ready to expand on the universe of Captain Falcon and company.
‘F-Zero GX Remastered’ is available now on the Nintendo eShop for $29.99. Whether you’re a seasoned pilot of the Blue Falcon or a first-time racer, this might just be the revival speed freaks have been waiting for.
