Square Enix announced today a major internal restructuring as the publisher aims to recover from recent financial setbacks and lackluster critical reception for several of its high-profile releases. In a statement to investors, the company outlined a new strategy focusing on “quality over quantity,” signaling a shift away from its previous model of rapid, large-scale multi-platform development.
The restructuring follows the publisher’s fiscal year earnings report, which revealed lower-than-expected sales from games including Forspoken and Foamstars. Despite a few commercial bright spots—such as Final Fantasy XIV’s continued success—analysts have pointed to inconsistent quality control and marketing missteps as contributing factors behind declining consumer trust.
As part of the new strategy, Square Enix will consolidate its development teams and re-evaluate projects still in pre-production. Sources close to the company suggest that resources will be redirected toward fewer but more polished titles, with a renewed emphasis on flagship franchises such as Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest. While no specific projects have been canceled at this time, insiders note that some smaller, experimental projects may face delays or shelving altogether.
Company president Takashi Kiryu stated, “We recognize that recent efforts haven’t met the standards our fans expect. By strengthening the foundations of our development processes, we aim to return to delivering unforgettable gaming experiences.” Kiryu also highlighted a plan to “maximize synergies” between Square Enix’s Japanese and Western teams, following the divestiture of Crystal Dynamics and Eidos in 2022.
The gaming community has reacted with cautious optimism. While some have expressed disappointment that riskier projects might be scaled back, others welcome the renewed focus on quality and polish—especially in the wake of several poorly received launches over the past two years.
Looking ahead, Square Enix plans to unveil updates to its development roadmap later this summer, likely during major industry events such as Gamescom and Tokyo Game Show. Fans are especially eager for more information on Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, which remains one of the most anticipated titles in the studio’s pipeline.
Whether this course correction will be enough to restore Square Enix’s reputation remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: the company is intent on learning from its missteps and evolving to meet the ever-changing demands of today’s gaming market.
