After nearly two years of speculation, FromSoftware has finally unveiled the release date for the highly anticipated Elden Ring DLC, Shadow of the Erdtree. Scheduled to launch on June 21, 2024, the expansion promises to delve deeper into the Lands Between with all-new areas, terrifying bosses, and cryptic lore that fans have come to expect from the studio behind Dark Souls and Bloodborne.
Accompanied by a stunning new trailer released early this morning, Shadow of the Erdtree offers a glimpse of what Tarnished players can expect on their next journey. Among the mysterious imagery was the first look at what may be the central antagonist — a colossal, serpentine entity partially entwined in golden roots, towering over a broken battlefield. The community is already abuzz with theories connecting the creature to Miquella, the enigmatic brother of Malenia who has long been hinted at but never seen in-game.
Director Hidetaka Miyazaki confirmed in a brief statement that the DLC will feature “the most ambitious boss encounters we’ve ever designed,” alongside a vastly expanded open-world region that exists parallel to the main map. Players will traverse ruined citadels, haunted wetlands, and forgotten temples in a zone that appears to be steeped in decay and divine remnants.
Long-time fans of FromSoftware’s storytelling will also be pleased to hear that the expansion will continue the signature environmental storytelling that made Elden Ring such a sensation in 2022. Cryptic item descriptions, NPC questlines, and hidden lore fragments will challenge players to piece together the narrative behind the Erdtree’s corrupted roots.
Shadow of the Erdtree will be available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Pre-orders for the expansion are now live, and multiple editions, including a Collector’s Edition featuring an exclusive statue of one of the new bosses, are already topping wishlists.
As June draws closer, more details are expected to emerge, but one thing is certain: The Lands Between are about to grow darker, deadlier, and even more captivating.
