Ubisoft Unleashes Massive Assassin’s Creed Multiplayer Revival and Teases New Projects

In a surprising yet nostalgic twist, Ubisoft has announced a major revival of its Assassin’s Creed multiplayer modes, breathing new life into a fan-favorite feature dormant for nearly a decade. Alongside the multiplayer comeback, the publisher also teased several new entries and fresh experiences within the Assassin’s Creed universe, signaling an ambitious year ahead for the franchise.

During its first digital showcase of 2024, Ubisoft revealed that a standalone multiplayer Assassin’s Creed title, codenamed “Invictus,” is currently in development. Drawing inspiration from the series’ beloved competitive modes first introduced in 2010’s Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood, “Invictus” aims to modernize the cat-and-mouse gameplay with expanded customization, new game modes, and cross-platform support.

Ubisoft Montreal, the studio behind several key Assassin’s Creed entries, is spearheading the project with support from veterans of the series’ original multiplayer design team. “We’re bringing back what made multiplayer in Assassin’s Creed unique—stealth, strategy, and social deception,” said creative director Simon Ricard. “But this time, we’re building it for long-term support and evolving it with our community.”

The reveal comes at a time when live-service and multiplayer elements have become defining trends in the industry. Ubisoft has been increasingly focused on creating persistent game worlds, and “Invictus” appears poised to be a centerpiece of its evolving multiplayer strategy.

In addition to the multiplayer focus, Ubisoft dropped hints about other projects in the pipeline. Assassin’s Creed Codename Red, set in feudal Japan, remains in active development and is rumored for a late 2024 release. Furthermore, new single-player expansions for AC Mirage and early concept art for an untitled Assassin’s Creed VR experience were briefly showcased.

For longtime fans, the return of multiplayer isn’t just a nod to the past but a bold statement about the franchise’s future. If done right, “Invictus” could mark a new era for Assassin’s Creed—one where the shadows hold not just hidden blades, but full lobbies of assassins plotting their next kill.
