FromSoftware has finally lifted the veil on its highly anticipated Elden Ring expansion, “Shadow of the Erdtree,” confirming a release date of June 21, 2024, alongside a breathtaking new trailer that’s already setting the internet ablaze with speculation.
Available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, the expansion promises to bring a wealth of new content to the critically acclaimed open-world action RPG. The cinematic-heavy trailer doesn’t show actual gameplay, but it offers tantalizing glimpses of haunting new environments, eerie enemies, and a mysterious new character—likely Miquella, the elusive sibling of Malenia, who many fans have long speculated would be central to the expansion’s story.
Clocking in at just over three minutes, the trailer opens with images of a scorched field strewn with ghostly figures and ends with an imposing new boss looming in the golden glow of a decaying Erdtree. Stylistically, it’s pure FromSoftware—ethereal, ominous, and dense with lore—and it’s already driving the community wild with theories.
While exact gameplay features remain under wraps, FromSoft has confirmed that Shadow of the Erdtree will introduce new weapons, spells, dungeons, and a substantial new region rivaling the size of Limgrave. For veteran Tarnished, this means fresh challenges that will test even the most skilled players. The expansion will be available as a standalone add-on, but also comes bundled in a new “Elden Ring: Game of the Year Edition,” which includes the base game and all post-launch content.
Elden Ring originally launched in February 2022 to massive critical and commercial success, winning multiple Game of the Year awards and cementing itself as one of the defining titles of this generation. Given the caliber of the base game, expectations for Shadow of the Erdtree are sky-high—and if this trailer is any indication, fans won’t be disappointed.
With just four months to go until launch, speculation and hype are building at a fever pitch. FromSoftware has managed to keep the bulk of Shadow of the Erdtree under wraps, but with the release date now official, it won’t be long before Tarnished across the world return to the Lands Between for another heroic (and likely brutal) journey.
