FromSoftware has finally lifted the veil on Elden Ring’s long-awaited expansion, *Shadow of the Erdtree*, announcing a release date of June 21, 2024. The reveal came with a breathtaking new trailer and a trove of information promising a sweeping new chapter for the award-winning RPG. For fans of the Lands Between, this DLC could be the most significant addition yet, introducing expansive environments, never-before-seen characters, and deeper lore intricately tied to the Erdtree itself.
According to studio director Hidetaka Miyazaki, *Shadow of the Erdtree* will feature “a world the size of—or even larger than—Limgrave,” the starting region of the base game. This new area, called the Land of Shadow, exists outside the boundaries of the Lands Between and will explore the mysterious backstory of Miquella, the reclusive demigod sibling of Malenia. The DLC will delve deeper into the divine lineage of the Outer Gods, promising a narrative thick with FromSoftware’s signature cryptic storytelling and environmental clues.
The trailer also showcases shadowy new enemies, stunning gothic architecture, and boss encounters that look every bit as demanding and imaginative as the base game’s. Notably, eagle-eyed fans glimpsed additional Spirit Ashes, weapon arts, and what appears to be new classes or subclasses, suggesting that the expansion will introduce new mechanics and customization options.
*Shadow of the Erdtree* will not be a standalone DLC and will require the base game to play. It will be available across all platforms Elden Ring originally launched on—PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. FromSoftware also confirmed a physical collector’s edition featuring a hardcover art book, soundtrack, and a Miquella figurine, which is now available for pre-order.
As hype builds toward the June release, the DLC stands to deepen Elden Ring’s already legendary footprint. With an expanded world, richer lore, and a new suite of deadly challenges, *Shadow of the Erdtree* could be FromSoftware’s most ambitious DLC to date—ushering fans back into the haunting beauty and horror of the Lands Between.
