After years of radio silence, Team Cherry has finally cracked open the mysteries surrounding its long-anticipated sequel, Hollow Knight: Silksong. During today’s surprise segment in the indie game showcase “Whispers of the Void,” the developer unveiled a brand-new gameplay trailer and—more crucially—a tentative release window: early 2025.
Silksong, the sequel to 2017’s critically acclaimed Hollow Knight, had faded into the ether after its initial 2019 announcement, leading fans to question if the game was stuck in development limbo. The sudden reappearance today sparked a wave of excitement among the community and confirmed that the game is still not only active, but seemingly nearing the final stages of production.
The two-minute trailer showcased the game’s nimble protagonist, Hornet, as she darts through newly revealed biomes teeming with beautifully grotesque enemies, intricate environmental hazards, and moody, hand-drawn backdrops—hallmarks of the original’s art style. A voiceover hints at a deepening narrative and a mysterious new kingdom ruled by a fractured order. New abilities and combat combos were also teased, highlighting Hornet’s faster, more fluid playstyle compared to Hollow Knight’s more methodical pacing.
Team Cherry noted that while Silksong is targeting an “early 2025” release, they remain committed to quality over speed—a sentiment echoed by co-director Ari Gibson in a brief statement aired after the trailer. “We know the wait’s been long, but every frame, every fight, and every note of the soundtrack is crafted with care. We want it to be worth it,” Gibson said.
Silksong will launch simultaneously on PC, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X/S, and PlayStation 5, with Game Pass subscribers gaining access on day one. Though no specific date was given, the projected time frame is the most concrete update the project has received in years.
With anticipation at an all-time high and the new trailer underlining Silksong’s polished progress, it’s safe to say that Hornet’s adventure is real, near, and more dazzling than ever.
