In a move that’s sure to excite longtime fans, Ubisoft officially confirmed today the development of “Assassin’s Creed: Invictus,” a standalone multiplayer installment in the iconic franchise slated for release in 2025. The title, which had been previously rumored but never detailed, signals a major push by the publisher into live-service territory as part of its broader Assassin’s Creed Infinity initiative.
Ubisoft made the announcement as part of a larger roadmap presentation for the Assassin’s Creed franchise. “Invictus” is being developed by an all-star team, including veterans from For Honor and Rainbow Six Siege, signaling the company’s commitment to competitive polish and multiplayer depth.
Not much is known about the gameplay specifics, but Ubisoft hinted at a PvP-focused experience with cooperative elements, set within the rich historical backdrops the series is known for. According to their statement, the game will allow players to become assassins from various timelines, suggesting a roster-style combat system not unlike hero-based shooters or brawlers.
“Assassin’s Creed has always been about immersing players in the shadows of history. With Invictus, we aim to bring that identity into a new era of multiplayer competition,” said Marc-Alexis Côté, executive producer of the Assassin’s Creed franchise. While he declined to confirm whether it would be free-to-play, he mentioned that Invictus is being designed for “long-term engagement.”
This isn’t Ubisoft’s first foray into Assassin’s Creed multiplayer. Fans will recall the cult-favorite PvP modes from Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood through AC3, which emphasized stealth and deception over twitch reflexes. Invictus appears to be drawing inspiration from those fan-loved systems, while extending them with modern online frameworks and a possibly seasonal content model.
With a tentative 2025 launch, Ubisoft has time to fine-tune gameplay, test network infrastructure, and gauge community feedback. A closed alpha for select regions is planned for late 2024, per Ubisoft’s roadmap.
Given the success of other multiplayer action games and a growing appetite for historical settings in online titles, Invictus might just mark a bold new era for the Brotherhood — if Ubisoft plays its blades right.
