Mass Effect fans hoping for a return to the stars may want to reset their Mass Relays—BioWare has confirmed that the next installment in the iconic sci-fi RPG series is still in development, but it’s a long way from launch.

In a blog post published this morning to coincide with N7 Day—the annual celebration of all things Mass Effect—the studio shared a brief update on the next game in the franchise. Project Director Mike Gamble addressed fans directly, reaffirming that the next chapter in the Mass Effect universe is “in early development” and that the dev team is “hard at work, exploring new stories and systems.”

“We know you’re eager—believe us, we are too,” Gamble wrote. “But quality takes time, and we’re committed to crafting an experience worthy of the Mass Effect name.”

The update included a tantalizing new piece of concept art featuring what some speculate could be a Geth figure walking amidst ruins on a mysterious planet. The ME community, ever the theory-crafting hive, was quick to analyze every pixel, with fans on Reddit and Twitter already developing elaborate theories about returning characters, factions, and timelines.

BioWare has been tight-lipped about specifics concerning the new game, including whether it will continue the storyline from the original trilogy, delve deeper into themes introduced in Mass Effect: Andromeda, or chart a completely new narrative course. Speculation is rampant, but official details remain scarce.

This development update comes as BioWare continues to navigate a challenging period marked by studio restructuring and a renewed focus on fewer, headline projects. The company is also working on Dragon Age: Dreadwolf, another major RPG that has similarly seen long development cycles and shifting timelines.

Although it may disappoint fans who were hoping for a release window or gameplay trailer, BioWare’s transparency about the early state of the project suggests a renewed emphasis on measured communication and quality-driven development.

For now, Mass Effect fans will have to hold onto their Omni-Tools and keep scanning for signals. The next mission to the stars is happening—but it’s still lightyears away.
