FromSoftware has finally lifted the veil on Shadow of the Erdtree, the highly anticipated DLC expansion for the award-winning action RPG *Elden Ring*. Confirming months of speculation, the developer announced that the expansion will launch on June 21, 2024, with a brand-new trailer showcasing new environments, bosses, and lore-rich content to explore.
The announcement was made early this morning via Bandai Namco’s official YouTube channel, accompanied by a 3-minute gameplay trailer that left fans buzzing. The footage offers tantalizing glimpses of previously unseen regions that appear to exist in a parallel realm to The Lands Between. Rich with haunting architecture, twisted forests, and shimmering skies, the new locations seem to build upon the game’s signature dark-fantasy aesthetic while pushing its visual ambition even further.
Alongside scenic vistas, the trailer teased what players can expect in terms of new foes. A menagerie of grotesque enemies and towering bosses were briefly revealed, including a colossal armored knight enveloped in ash and an eerie medusa-like figure that manipulates golden flame—hinting that the Erdtree’s secrets might be darker than we imagined. Fan-favorite content creator Iron Pineapple tweeted, “They weren’t lying—Shadow of the Erdtree looks more cursed, cryptic, and colossal than anything in the base game.”
Story-wise, the expansion appears to focus on Miquella, the enigmatic sibling of Malenia, who was notably central to Elden Ring’s most cryptic lore threads. The trailer shows a golden cocoon and glimpses of Miquella’s arm reaching through an unknown realm, suggesting players may finally discover his fate and unravel more of the Erdtree’s murky past.
Shadow of the Erdtree will be a paid expansion, with pre-orders now available for $39.99 across all platforms, including PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. FromSoftware has confirmed that save progression from the original game will carry over, but recommends players be at least level 120 to tackle the new content.
With just a few months to go, *Elden Ring* fans are already preparing to return to the battlefield. One thing’s for certain: death, despair, and epic discovery await once more beneath the shadow of the Erdtree.
