In a major announcement ahead of this year’s holiday season, Sony has officially revealed the long-rumored PlayStation 5 Pro, a mid-generation refresh of its flagship console, set to launch in late 2024. Promising significant performance upgrades, the PS5 Pro aims to deliver improved graphical fidelity, smoother frame rates, and cutting-edge AI-powered upscaling — all while maintaining compatibility with the existing PS5 library.
At the core of the PS5 Pro is a beefed-up version of the AMD Zen 2 CPU and RDNA 3 GPU architecture. While Sony did not release detailed specs during the announcement, early insider reports suggest the new system will pack up to 33% more GPU power than the standard PS5. The most talked-about feature, however, is the introduction of “PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution” (PSSR) — Sony’s proprietary AI upscaling technology designed to rival, if not exceed, NVIDIA’s DLSS or AMD’s FSR. PSSR will allow games to render at lower internal resolutions while displaying at native 4K with significantly sharper visuals and enhanced performance.
Ray tracing will also see a massive upgrade, with Sony claiming the PS5 Pro will offer up to 2x the performance in ray-traced lighting and reflections. This makes the Pro model particularly attractive for developers looking to push visual boundaries without compromising frame rates. Furthermore, a new “Performance+ mode” will aim to stabilize 60FPS and 120FPS targets in supported titles, even in the most graphically intense scenes.
The PS5 Pro will feature a nearly identical design to the existing slim models but will come with a distinctive matte black finish and subtle lighting accents differentiating it from previous iterations. Sony confirmed that all PS5 games, accessories, and peripherals will remain fully compatible with the Pro model.
Though no official pricing has been disclosed, industry analysts predict a launch price in the range of $599–$649 USD. Sony is expected to share more details, including exact hardware specs and bundled deals, at a dedicated showcase later this summer.
With the console wars heating up again and Microsoft preparing its own mid-gen refresh, the PlayStation 5 Pro is set to be a major player heading into the busiest season of the gaming year.
