Nintendo has finally broken its silence on the long-rumored successor to the Nintendo Switch, confirming development of the next-generation console and offering a glimpse at its highly anticipated launch window: Holiday 2024.
In a video presentation earlier today, Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa shared that the new console—currently referred to as the “Switch 2” by fans—will retain the hybrid design that made the original Switch a blockbuster success while offering “significant hardware advancements.” Though specific technical specs are still under wraps, Furukawa hinted at improved processing power, higher resolution support, and better battery life.
“We plan to maintain the flexibility and accessibility that defined the Nintendo Switch while pushing innovation to new levels,” Furukawa said. “Players can look forward to surprises, both in hardware and in the software lineup.”
The announcement comes amid growing pressure from fans and analysts as the original Switch, first released in 2017, enters its seventh year on the market. Sales have slowed slightly in recent quarters, sparking speculation that the console’s lifecycle was nearing its end. With both Sony’s PlayStation 5 and Microsoft’s Xbox Series X/S entering maturity, Nintendo’s next step was inevitable.
While no first-party titles for the Switch 2 were officially revealed, Nintendo teased that several flagship franchises will be making a return alongside the new hardware. According to industry insiders, a new 3D Mario title and a follow-up to The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom are in development for launch or shortly after.
Nintendo also confirmed that more information will be revealed in a dedicated Direct presentation later this summer.
The reveal sets the stage for one of the most competitive holiday seasons in recent gaming history. With Switch 2 poised to take center stage, and rivals continuing to battle for dominance, 2024 is shaping up to be a pivotal year for the industry.
For now, Nintendo fans can mark their calendars and cross their fingers—the Switch 2 may be just months away.
