Microsoft has revealed the new lineup of Xbox Game Pass titles for July, and it’s a refresh full of surprises. Headlining the list is the unexpected arrival of Ubisoft’s critically acclaimed Assassin’s Creed Origins, marking a deeper collaboration between Microsoft and the French developer-publisher. Alongside it, two brand-new indie titles are joining the service on day one, bolstering Game Pass’ reputation as a discovery engine for innovative gameplay experiences.
Assassin’s Creed Origins, originally released in 2017, is widely regarded as a turning point for the franchise, introducing a sprawling open world set in Ancient Egypt and deeper RPG mechanics. Its addition to Game Pass allows a new generation of players to experience Bayek’s journey free of charge—provided they subscribe. With Ubisoft previously reserving their classic library for their own subscription service, Ubisoft+, today’s announcement signifies a noticeable shift in strategy.
On the indie front, Game Pass subscribers can look forward to Neon White-style FPS-platformer Lightrunner and cozy farming RPG Meadowvale, both available on launch day. Lightrunner combines fast-paced parkour with a neon-drenched aesthetic reminiscent of Mirror’s Edge and Ghostrunner, while Meadowvale takes a slower approach, offering Stardew Valley vibes with a strong narrative focus about rebuilding a forest town after a storm.
Sarah Bond, Microsoft’s VP of Game Creator Experience and Ecosystem, emphasized the value these additions bring to subscribers. “With a mix of iconic titles like Assassin’s Creed Origins and boundary-pushing indie games, we’re continuing our mission to offer a diverse and curated selection for every gamer,” she said in today’s livestream.
This month’s additions reinforce Microsoft’s growing emphasis on variety and day-one content in Game Pass, a distinguishing factor in what’s become a fiercely competitive subscription gaming space. With Sony’s PlayStation Plus Extra lineup focusing heavily on blockbusters (and fewer debuts), Game Pass’s embrace of indies and legacy IPs sets it apart as a platform willing to take risks—and often reap rewards.
Xbox Game Pass subscribers can expect these titles to drop starting July 5, with Lightrunner and Meadowvale unlocking simultaneously worldwide. Assassin’s Creed Origins will follow on July 10.
