Nintendo has officially confirmed that its next-generation console is in development and is scheduled to be unveiled by the end of March 2025. The announcement, made in a statement by Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa during a recent investors call, marks the first direct acknowledgment of the long-rumored successor to the Nintendo Switch.
Furukawa shared that details about the new hardware will be revealed “within this fiscal year,” which for Nintendo ends in March 2025. While no specific date or product name was disclosed, Furukawa emphasized that the company plans to maintain its strong software pipeline for the Switch while also preparing for the transition to its next gaming platform.
This confirmation ends years of speculation about Nintendo’s follow-up to the massively successful Switch, which launched in 2017 and has sold over 139 million units worldwide as of early 2024. Rumors surrounding the new system point to improved hardware capabilities, backward compatibility with Switch software, and a continued focus on hybrid gaming, though Nintendo has not verified any of these features.
“We will make a separate announcement about the successor to Nintendo Switch during this fiscal year,” Furukawa stated, noting that today’s disclosure was largely driven by investor anticipation. “It will have been over nine years since we announced the existence of Nintendo Switch back in March 2015.”
The timing of the reveal could align with major industry events, such as a dedicated Nintendo Direct or a new iteration of the Tokyo Game Show, though no specific plans have been revealed. Nintendo has also confirmed a June 2024 Nintendo Direct focused only on Switch titles for the second half of the year, clarifying that no new console details will be shared during that presentation.
As the gaming industry eyes the next era of Nintendo hardware, fans and analysts alike will be watching closely for more news. With its unique legacy of innovation and unpredictability, Nintendo’s next move could once again redefine how we play.
