After more than a year of anticipation and speculation, FromSoftware has officially pulled back the curtain on Elden Ring’s first major expansion. Titled Shadow of the Erdtree, the long-awaited DLC will launch globally on June 21, 2024, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC — and yes, it looks as massive and mysterious as the Lands Between themselves.
Unveiled alongside a breathtaking three-minute trailer, Shadow of the Erdtree promises to take players deep into a new realm tied to Miquella, the elusive twin brother of Malenia. While details remain cryptic in classic FromSoftware fashion, the trailer teased brand-new environments, unsettling new bosses, and a more intimate storyline steeped in the mythology of the Erdtree. Fans of the base game’s notoriously obtuse lore will likely find plenty to decipher — and die trying.
Creative director Hidetaka Miyazaki spoke briefly about the expansion’s vision during a press release, noting that Shadow of the Erdtree “explores lost legacies, ancient conflicts, and forgotten truths buried beneath the golden light.” Comparisons are already being made to Bloodborne’s lauded expansion, The Old Hunters, and even Dark Souls III’s Ringed City, with players hoping for a similarly challenging and lore-rich addition.
FromSoftware confirmed that the expansion is not standalone and will require the base game to play. Players can expect new weapons, armor sets, magic spells, and challenging dungeons alongside narrative threads that pick up loose ends some may have missed on their first (or fifth) playthrough.
Pre-orders for digital and collector’s editions are now live. A premium collector’s bundle includes an artbook, soundtrack, and a statue of Miquella — a treat for diehard fans eager to delve deeper into the lore of Elden Ring’s world.
Shadow of the Erdtree marks the next chapter in Elden Ring’s ongoing legacy, and with just over three months until launch, the Lands Between are already stirring. Time to sharpen your greatsword, Tarnished — a new journey awaits.
