FromSoftware has finally broken its silence on Elden Ring’s highly anticipated expansion, officially announcing the release date of Shadow of the Erdtree alongside a jaw-dropping new trailer. The DLC is set to launch on June 21, 2024, and promises to take players deeper into the mythos of the Lands Between with new regions, bosses, weapons, and story content.
The new cinematic trailer, which premiered during a surprise stream early Tuesday morning, sent shockwaves through the gaming community. Clocking in at over three minutes, it showcases a strange, war-torn landscape cloaked in mist, new twisted enemies, and cryptic hints about the fate of Miquella — the enigmatic brother of Malenia, left largely unexplored in the base game. Fan theorists are already buzzing about the appearance of a massive tree-like structure that appears to be neither the Erdtree nor its shadow — suggesting FromSoftware might be delving into previously unknown aspects of Elden Ring’s deep lore.
Shadow of the Erdtree will reportedly include an entirely new map zone that is said to rival the size of Limgrave. In true FromSoftware fashion, it will be seamlessly accessible from the main world once specific conditions are met — though what those are remains a mystery. Players can expect a host of new weapons, armor sets, and spells, as well as more challenging legacy dungeons designed to test even the most hardened Tarnished.
Director Hidetaka Miyazaki briefly spoke in a press release following the trailer’s launch. “We are thrilled to share Shadow of the Erdtree with the community. This expansion continues the story through pain, ambition, and the pursuit of something greater.”
The DLC will be available for purchase individually or as part of a new deluxe edition of Elden Ring, which will include the base game and the DLC bundled together. Pre-orders are now live across all platforms, including PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
With nearly two years since Elden Ring’s release, Shadow of the Erdtree could reignite passion for the acclaimed open-world Soulslike — and redefine what players expect from DLC expansions.
