FromSoftware has finally unveiled the long-awaited release date for Elden Ring’s first major DLC, “Shadow of the Erdtree.” Set to launch on June 21, 2024, the expansion promises a deeper dive into the Lands Between with new areas, powerful enemies, and tantalizing story content that builds on the critically acclaimed base game.
Accompanying the announcement is a cinematic and gameplay-blended trailer that showcases a sweeping new region known as the “Land of Shadow.” This mysterious realm is said to be cloaked in intrigue and danger, featuring haunting ruins, warped landscapes, and sky-rending cataclysms that signal the return of ancient powers. Most notably, the trailer gives fans a first look at several new boss encounters—including what appear to be corrupted demigods and previously unseen Elden entities. One particularly chilling moment teases a heavily armored foe with flame-scarred wings and a hammer that ripples with dark Grace, suggesting the DLC will continue FromSoftware’s tradition of terrifying and inventive enemy design.
“Shadow of the Erdtree” will introduce a wealth of new gameplay features, including additional weapons, spells, and armor sets—many of which seem to be tied to its darker, more corrupted themes. FromSoftware has also hinted at narrative revelations surrounding Miquella, a central yet elusive character from the main game whose role in the coming events is expected to be significant.
Hidetaka Miyazaki, director of Elden Ring, called the DLC “our biggest expansion yet” in a brief statement. “We’ve always wanted to explore the unseen corners of this world. With Shadow of the Erdtree, players will journey beyond the Erdtree’s light into places where fate was once sealed.”
Available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, the expansion will be priced at $39.99 and will also be part of a new deluxe bundle including the base game. With just four months to go, the hype among fans is palpable—as is the promise of more punishingly beautiful boss fights and cryptic lore coming this summer.
