CD Projekt Red Reveals Cyberpunk 2077 Sequel Codenamed ‘Orion’ Is Now in Early Development

CD Projekt Red has officially confirmed that the sequel to Cyberpunk 2077, currently codenamed “Project Orion,” has entered early development. During a recent investor presentation, the studio disclosed that several members of the original Cyberpunk 2077 team have relocated to the company’s new North American hub in Boston to spearhead the next chapter in the ambitious sci-fi franchise.

Following a rocky launch in 2020, Cyberpunk 2077 has enjoyed an impressive redemption arc. The release of the acclaimed Phantom Liberty expansion in 2023 and the steady rollout of patches and improvements helped rebuild goodwill among fans and critics alike. With millions of copies sold and a TV adaptation on the way, CD Projekt’s neon-drenched dystopia is poised to evolve far beyond its troubled beginnings.

Project Orion is described by CDPR CEO Adam Kiciński as a “bold leap” intended to fully realize the potential of the Cyberpunk universe. The sequel will be built with Unreal Engine 5—a departure from the studio’s proprietary REDengine—and promises deeper role-playing mechanics, more dynamic storytelling, and a world that reacts more organically to player choices. Though it’s still very early in the development cycle, CDPR is clearly aiming to push boundaries in both narrative ambition and technical design.

“There’s a clear vision for what we want Cyberpunk to become,” said Paweł Sasko, Quest Director for both the original game and Phantom Liberty. “With Project Orion, we are taking all the lessons we learned over the past few years and building something more immersive, more responsive, and more alive.”

No specific release date or window has been given, but CD Projekt Red has committed to transparency throughout the development process, promising more frequent updates and community feedback cycles in the build-up to release.

As anticipation mounts and the studio sets its sights on North America for its creative future, fans of Night City can rest assured: the world of Cyberpunk is not just alive—it’s leveling up.
