CD Projekt Red has announced that *Cyberpunk 2077* has surpassed 25 million units sold worldwide, cementing its place among the most commercially successful RPGs of the past decade. The milestone was revealed during the company’s latest financial briefing, where executives also confirmed that a full sequel, codenamed “Project Orion,” is officially in development.
Originally launched in December 2020 to a rocky reception marred by bugs and performance issues—especially on last-gen consoles—*Cyberpunk 2077* has undergone a remarkable redemption arc. A steady stream of patches, critical updates, and, most recently, the lauded Phantom Liberty expansion have steadily rebuilt the game’s reputation. Word-of-mouth praise and high-profile re-reviews have helped propel sales, with a notable spike following the release of the 2.0 update in September 2023.
“Thanks to the dedication of our development team and the continued support of our players, *Cyberpunk 2077* is now the experience we always intended it to be,” said CD Projekt CEO Adam Kiciński. “We’re incredibly proud to have reached the 25 million mark, and we can’t wait to return to Night City with Project Orion.”
While CD Projekt Red shared little in the way of concrete details about Project Orion, the studio confirmed the sequel will be developed by a new North American studio, CD Projekt Red North America, headquartered in Boston. The move signals the Polish developer’s ambition to firmly establish a presence in the Western AAA development scene, likely to attract top-tier talent for what’s expected to be a massive undertaking.
Given Cyberpunk’s dramatic rebound and Phantom Liberty’s positive critical reception, expectations are high for the sequel. Fans are already busy speculating on where Project Orion might take players—whether continuing the story of V and the remnants of Night City, or venturing into new corners of the Cyberpunk universe.
With CD Projekt Red turning its attention toward its next wave of games—including a new *Witcher* trilogy and now a *Cyberpunk* sequel—the future looks bright for the studio and its growing stable of franchises.
