CD Projekt Red has scored another major win with their critically acclaimed Cyberpunk 2077 expansion, “Phantom Liberty,” which has now officially sold over 5 million copies. Announced via the company’s year-end investor call, the milestone caps off a remarkable turnaround story for the once-troubled title, which debuted in December 2020 to a mix of praise and controversy due to widespread technical issues.
Released in September 2023, “Phantom Liberty” introduced new characters, quests, and locations to Night City, along with a host of quality-of-life improvements and gameplay overhauls that were met with near-universal acclaim. The espionage-themed expansion starred Idris Elba as Solomon Reed, an FIA agent entangled in a high-stakes conspiracy, and marked what many fans see as Cyberpunk 2077’s true redemption arc.
Speaking to investors and fans alike, CD Projekt Red executives emphasized the importance of this success, noting that “Phantom Liberty” helped restore consumer confidence and reaffirmed their commitment to AAA single-player RPGs. The game’s momentum also contributed to bolstering player interest in the base game, and CDPR confirmed that Cyberpunk 2077 had attracted millions of new players throughout 2023.
However, as the studio celebrates this comeback, it also looks to the future. CD Projekt Red confirmed that active development is now shifting toward the next mainline Witcher title — colloquially referred to as “Witcher 4.” While details remain scarce, the new Witcher adventure is being developed on Unreal Engine 5, marking a significant technical shift from the studio’s proprietary REDengine used for past projects.
CD Projekt Red also revealed that a growing portion of its development staff is now fully dedicated to “Polaris,” the codename for the new Witcher game. Based on prior statements, “Polaris” will kick off a new trilogy in the Witcher universe, introducing a fresh saga while maintaining the franchise’s beloved fantasy-RPG roots.
As 2024 begins, the success of “Phantom Liberty” positions CD Projekt Red on solid footing, with fans eager to see what’s next — whether it’s the snow-covered paths of the Continent or another cyber-enhanced twist in Night City.
