After years of speculation and eager anticipation, FromSoftware has finally pulled back the fog gate on Elden Ring’s long-awaited expansion. Titled “Shadow of the Erdtree,” the DLC is officially set to launch on June 21, 2024, and fans got their first glimpse of the new content in a thrilling gameplay trailer released earlier today.
Clocking in at just over three minutes, the trailer showcases a hauntingly beautiful new region bathed in golden twilight, promising environmental storytelling as rich and cryptic as anything seen in the base game. The Shadow of the Erdtree introduces a host of new enemies, bosses, weapons, and armor sets, all wrapped in the franchise’s signature blend of cryptic lore and brutally rewarding combat. Notably, players catch glimpses of a towering figure resembling Miquella — a long-speculated character in the original game who never appears on-screen. His inclusion could finally shed light on one of Elden Ring’s biggest mysteries.
FromSoftware’s Hidetaka Miyazaki described the DLC as “our largest and most ambitious expansion yet” in a post-release Q&A. He emphasized that Shadow of the Erdtree will push players to “confront truths hidden beneath the Lands Between” and confirmed the new area is not simply an add-on zone — it’s an entirely new realm accessible after defeating specific late-game bosses.
The trailer has already sent shockwaves through the Elden Ring community, with theory crafters eager to dissect every frame for clues about what’s to come. Early speculation suggests the DLC explores a darker side of the Lands Between’s mythology, possibly diving into the origins of the Erdtree itself, or even revealing a time before the Shattering.
Shadow of the Erdtree will be available as a digital download across all platforms — PlayStation 4 & 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam. Pre-orders are live now, with Deluxe Editions offering exclusive digital art books and soundtrack access.
With just four months until release, Tarnished everywhere are now racing to complete their NG+ runs — or start fresh — in preparation for what might be one of the most significant expansions FromSoftware has ever produced.
