FromSoftware fans, rejoice — the long-awaited Shadow of the Erdtree expansion for Elden Ring finally has a confirmed release date. Debuted this morning alongside a stunning new gameplay trailer, the DLC is set to launch on June 21, 2024, across all major platforms.
First announced in early 2023, Shadow of the Erdtree has remained shrouded in mystery — until now. The new trailer provides the first in-depth look at what players can expect, including eerie new landscapes, monstrous bosses, a suite of fresh weapons and magic, and what appears to be the introduction of a brand-new narrative thread that delves deeper into the mythology of the Lands Between.
The trailer opens with a haunting shot of a spectral tree in decay, a stark contrast to the golden Erdtree we’ve come to know. The voiceover hints at a forgotten realm lost to time — one that exists parallel to the current map but is entirely distinct in architecture and ambiance. From crumbling gothic ruins to vast fields under ominous skies, the DLC world appears more foreboding than ever.
Perhaps the biggest highlight is a glimpse of several new bosses — twisted creatures bearing necrotic armor, serpentine knights wielding dual-bladed glaives, and what looks to be a key antagonist cloaked in shadows and whispers. The combat also appears even more dynamic, showcasing new weapon types, including whip-like blades and defensive magic spheres, promising unique build opportunities for returning players.
Developed with the same meticulous attention to detail for which FromSoftware is known, Shadow of the Erdtree promises to expand Elden Ring’s already massive scope. Hidetaka Miyazaki, the game’s director, confirmed in an interview that this DLC mirrors the scale of Bloodborne’s The Old Hunters in terms of content and challenge, with experienced Tarnished players in mind.
Pre-orders for Shadow of the Erdtree are now live, with both digital and collector’s editions up for grabs — the latter including a premium art book and a figure of one of the DLC’s new bosses. With just four months to go, Elden Ring fans will soon have another reason to brave the Lands Between once again.
