FromSoftware has finally pulled back the curtain on the long-awaited expansion to 2022’s Game of the Year. “Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree” now has an official release date: June 21, 2024. Alongside the announcement, a brand-new cinematic and gameplay trailer dropped this morning, showcasing mesmerizing landscapes, cryptic lore, and what appear to be several massive new boss encounters.
The DLC, which has been in development since shortly after the game’s original launch, takes players to the Land of Shadow — a new, interconnected region with its own eerie aesthetic that looks both beautiful and profoundly sinister. Fans familiar with the base game’s storytelling may notice implications of deeper lore surrounding the demigod Miquella, whose mysterious role in the original game left players with more questions than answers.
FromSoftware has confirmed that Shadow of the Erdtree will not be a standalone title — players will need the base game to access the DLC, and it’s recommended that they be well into the late-game, given the expected difficulty. In true Soulsborne fashion, the trailer teases a slew of monstrous enemies, including a serpentine colossus wreathed in flame, a ghostly knight with an ethereal blade, and a cloaked figure wielding shadow magic that might just rival the player’s own rune-enhanced powers.
The trailer also hints at expanded build possibilities with never-before-seen weapons and armor sets, possibly introducing new mechanics or magic types. While details remain cryptic, the sheer visual scale and atmosphere of the expansion already have fans abuzz on social media.
This marks the first major content update to Elden Ring since launch, and expectations are sky-high. With Shadow of the Erdtree, FromSoftware looks poised to deepen its already rich open-world mythology and deliver another brutal, unforgettable adventure for Tarnished veterans.
“Shadow of the Erdtree” will be available on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Pre-orders have gone live today along with a collector’s edition featuring a statue of a new character teased in the trailer — possibly central to the DLC’s story arc.
