FromSoftware has finally ended months of speculation by unveiling the release date for its highly anticipated Elden Ring expansion, Shadow of the Erdtree. Fans of the 2022 Game of the Year can mark their calendars: the expansion arrives on June 21, 2024. Along with the announcement, the developer dropped a stunning new gameplay trailer that offers a detailed glimpse into the brutal and beautiful world awaiting players.
The trailer opens with sweeping shots of shadow-drenched landscapes, unfamiliar ruins, and twisted new enemies, punctuated by a haunting orchestral score. Perhaps most intriguing for lore-hungry fans is the appearance of Miquella, the mysterious Empyrean sibling of Malenia, whose fate has been shrouded in mystery since the base game’s release. The trailer suggests that Shadow of the Erdtree will dive deeper into Miquella’s story, potentially answering long-standing questions while raising new ones.
Gameplay-wise, the expansion appears to be leaning even further into FromSoftware’s signature blend of precise combat, exploration, and cryptic narrative. Players can expect new weapons, spells, and armor sets, along with a fresh array of monstrous bosses. One particularly chilling scene shows a towering knight clad in molten armor crushing a demi-human with a flaming greatsword, signaling that Shadow of the Erdtree won’t be pulling any punches when it comes to difficulty.
The expansion will be available across all platforms where Elden Ring is currently playable — PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam. Pre-orders are now live, with a Collector’s Edition that includes a Miquella statue, steelbook case, artbook, and digital soundtrack already generating significant buzz among fans.
With Elden Ring’s base game selling over 20 million copies and becoming a cultural touchstone for open-world gaming, Shadow of the Erdtree carries enormous expectations. Based on this first look, FromSoftware appears ready to rise to the occasion. June can’t come soon enough.
