FromSoftware has officially unveiled the long-awaited release date for Elden Ring’s expansion, “Shadow of the Erdtree” — June 21, 2024. Alongside the announcement, fans were treated to a gripping new trailer that teased a sprawling new realm, heart-pounding boss battles, and more secrets born from the Lands Between.
The DLC, described by FromSoftware as the “largest expansion” they’ve ever created, beckons players into the mysterious Land of Shadow — a realm shrouded in legend and intertwined with the enigmatic past of the Erdtree. The new area appears to rival the size of Limgrave and includes hauntingly beautiful landscapes, gothic architecture, and corrupted creatures that push the game’s already brutal combat to new heights.
While FromSoftware remains cryptic about much of the new story, the trailer heavily alludes to Miquella — the lesser-known Empyrean sibling of Malenia — possibly playing a central role in the narrative. Fans have long speculated about Miquella’s fate, and it appears “Shadow of the Erdtree” will finally bring some long-awaited answers while raising even more questions.
Gameplay-wise, footage reveals several new enemy types, including what looks like a corrupted tree-beast and a colossal knight wielding a nigh-impossible-to-dodge greatsword. New weapon types, armor sets, and magic abilities are also hinted at throughout the trailer, suggesting fresh build opportunities for Tarnished veterans.
In addition, the expansion will be available for all platforms Elden Ring originally launched on — PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. A Collector’s Edition, featuring a stunning Miquella figurine and hardback artbook, is already generating buzz and is currently open for pre-orders.
After Elden Ring’s meteoric success in 2022, fans have been eager for any sign of expansion. With “Shadow of the Erdtree,” FromSoftware isn’t just delivering more content — they’re expanding the mythos of what many consider the studio’s magnum opus. Expect more reveals in the coming weeks as the countdown to June 21 begins.
