Elden Ring’s Shadow of the Erdtree Expansion Finally Gets Release Date, Major Gameplay Details Revealed

After much anticipation and speculation, FromSoftware has finally lifted the veil on Elden Ring’s long-awaited expansion, *Shadow of the Erdtree*. Announced via an official trailer dropped earlier today, the DLC is set for release on June 21, 2024, and promises to delve deeper into the enigmatic lore of the Lands Between with new regions, bosses, and storylines that build on the events of the base game.

The trailer, just under three minutes long, gives fans a tantalizing glimpse of what’s to come: vast and twisted new landscapes, grotesque new enemies, and what appears to be an all-new protagonist—or perhaps a key figure in the Tarnished’s evolving story. Most notably, the expansion appears to center around Miquella, the elusive brother of Malenia, who was notably absent from most of the base game. His story looks to be at the heart of this new chapter.

Gameplay-wise, *Shadow of the Erdtree* introduces several new weapon categories, magic systems, and an expanded leveling mechanic that FromSoftware says aims to “reshape player customization and combat strategies.” The development team also confirmed that players will not need to start a new game to access the DLC but will need to reach the Mohgwyn Palace area and defeat Mohg, Lord of Blood — a mid-to-late game boss — to unlock the new content.

The expansion is expected to add roughly 20–25 hours of new content, with optional areas expanding that estimate. FromSoftware’s Hidetaka Miyazaki called *Shadow of the Erdtree* “our most ambitious expansion to date,” during a brief Q&A following the trailer’s release. He also noted that much of the feedback from the playerbase informed the depth and structure of the new environments.

*Shadow of the Erdtree* will be available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Pre-orders go live this Friday, with several editions including a Collector’s Edition that features an exclusive Miquella-themed statue and hardcover lore book.
