FromSoftware has finally lifted the veil on the long-anticipated expansion to its 2022 Game of the Year, Elden Ring. Titled “Shadow of the Erdtree,” the DLC is set to launch on June 21, 2024, and comes accompanied by a jaw-dropping new trailer that offers tantalizing hints at what’s to come in the Lands Between.
The cinematic and gameplay-packed trailer, released earlier today, reveals a new storyline centered around Miquella, a key figure teased in the base game. Players will journey into a previously unseen realm, separate from the familiar lands of Limgrave and Leyndell. The expansion promises new enemies, fearsome bosses, powerful weapons, and twisted dungeons—a FromSoftware staple reborn in fresh, terrifying ways.
Fans have been speculating about the scope and setting of Shadow of the Erdtree since its announcement over a year ago with a single teaser image. The new footage provides a much clearer glimpse into the expansion’s tone: bleak yet majestic, with towering landscapes, ancient structures, and grotesque creatures that feel ripped from a dark fantasy painting.
Game director Hidetaka Miyazaki has said the DLC will be FromSoftware’s “largest expansion to date,” with content designed not just for the late-game Lords among the Tarnished, but for seasoned veterans looking for the next step in their odyssey. Reports indicate Shadow of the Erdtree will include over a dozen new bosses and a story arc that delves deeper into the mythos surrounding Queen Marika, the Erdtree, and the Empyreans.
Preorders for the DLC are now live across all platforms, and Bandai Namco is offering a premium collector’s edition bundled with a statue of Messmer the Impaler—a new antagonist glimpsed in the trailer—and a 40-page artbook.
With just four months to go, the countdown has officially begun. Shadow of the Erdtree seeks not only to expand the sprawling world of Elden Ring, but to once again raise the bar for what players expect from DLC in an already legendary franchise.
