After years of radio silence and rampant speculation, Bethesda has finally lifted the veil on one of gaming’s most anticipated titles. The Elder Scrolls VI, the long-awaited follow-up to 2011’s The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, now has an official launch window: 2026.
During a surprise segment at Xbox’s Summer Showcase, Bethesda Game Studios announced the release window alongside a cinematic teaser that offered a sweeping glimpse of the game’s setting. While no in-depth gameplay footage was shown just yet, studio head Todd Howard confirmed that an extended gameplay reveal is scheduled for summer 2025.
Fans of the franchise have been clamoring for more news since the game’s initial announcement back in 2018. Despite its early teaser, Bethesda has opted to keep development details closely guarded until now. With 2026 officially marked on the calendar, this signals a more transparent phase in the game’s journey—finally satiating a fan base that has waited more than a decade for a new mainline entry.
According to Howard, The Elder Scrolls VI will “push the boundaries of emergent gameplay, faction dynamics, and open-world realism.” He emphasized that this latest installment is being developed exclusively for current-gen hardware, including Xbox Series X|S and PC, and will be optimized for long-term modding and community support.
While the 2026 window may seem distant, it aligns with Bethesda’s typical development cadence and ensures the game will benefit from the studio’s full resources—especially now that Starfield is post-launch and entering a stable update cycle.
Notably, Xbox executives confirmed that The Elder Scrolls VI will launch day-one on Xbox Game Pass, adding even more value for subscribers and signaling Microsoft’s continued push for platform exclusivity following its acquisition of ZeniMax Media in 2021.
With the countdown now officially underway, Bethesda fans finally have something concrete to look forward to. Until then, 2025’s promised gameplay reveal will likely be the next big moment to circle on the calendar.
