Fable Returns: First Gameplay Trailer Revealed at Xbox Showcase

The long-awaited revival of the legendary Fable franchise is finally beginning to take shape. During today’s Xbox Games Showcase, Playground Games pulled back the curtain on the first full gameplay trailer for Fable, marking the franchise’s return after more than a decade since its last mainline entry.

The trailer, brimming with the series’ signature British wit, fantasy charm, and irreverent humor, struck a chord with longtime fans while giving newcomers a glimpse into the whimsical yet darkly mysterious world of Albion. This time, the series is being developed by Playground Games — the studio best known for the Forza Horizon series — and the transition from racecars to swords and spells appears promising so far.

Narrated by comedian and actor Richard Ayoade, who plays a pompous gardening giant named Dave, the trailer showcases stunning visual fidelity powered by Unreal Engine 5, blending tongue-in-cheek dialogue with lush environments and fast-paced action. The protagonist, a female hero clad in worn armor, is shown dispatching goblin-like creatures with swordplay and magic, hinting at a dynamic combat system.

Playground Games emphasized that while this Fable will honor the original trilogy’s legacy — with moral choices, quirky NPCs, and a rich open world — it’s also a “fresh start” for the franchise. Creative Director Anna Megill stated, “We’re building a vibrant, story-driven open-world RPG that feels authentically Fable, but with the visual and gameplay ambitions of modern RPGs.”

While a specific release date remains elusive, Xbox confirmed the game is targeting a 2025 launch on Xbox Series X|S and PC, and will be available day one on Xbox Game Pass.
