Nintendo Confirms Next-Gen Console Reveal Set for This Fiscal Year

In a long-awaited update from the company, Nintendo has officially confirmed that it will unveil its next-generation console before the end of the current fiscal year. The announcement came directly from Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa, who addressed the news during a presentation on the company’s full-year financial results.

“This is Furukawa, President of Nintendo. We will make an announcement about the successor to the Nintendo Switch within this fiscal year,” he stated on social media, translating to sometime between now and March 31, 2025. He also noted that more information will come “within this fiscal year,” suggesting fans may not have to wait too much longer for concrete details — a promising sign as speculation surrounding the so-called “Switch 2” reaches fever pitch.

Nintendo is quick to emphasize that this announcement is not happening during the upcoming June Nintendo Direct, which will focus solely on games coming in the second half of 2024 and provide updates on the current Switch lineup. The new console reveal will happen separately, even though Furukawa acknowledged it’s been more than nine years since the Switch was first revealed in October 2016.

Despite no official hardware reveal yet, leaks and reports have painted an intriguing picture of what Nintendo’s next console might offer. Rumors tout an upgraded Nvidia chipset capable of PS4 or even PS5-level visuals, backward compatibility with existing Switch titles, and a continued emphasis on hybrid handheld/TV functionality.
