Nintendo Confirms Switch 2 Announcement Coming This Fiscal Year, Hints at Big Reveal Soon

MelloGeneral Gaming News1 week ago3 Views

Nintendo has officially broken its silence about the successor to the wildly popular Nintendo Switch. In a message posted by Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa, the Japanese gaming giant confirmed that its next-generation console will be announced within the current fiscal year — a move that could dramatically reshape the gaming landscape.

“This is Furukawa, President of Nintendo,” the post on X (formerly Twitter) began. “We will make an announcement about the successor to Nintendo Switch within this fiscal year. It will have been over nine years since we announced the existence of Nintendo Switch back in March 2015. We will be holding a Nintendo Direct this June regarding the Nintendo Switch software lineup for the latter half of 2024, but please be aware that there will be no mention of the Nintendo Switch successor during that presentation.”

In typical Nintendo fashion, the announcement comes with both excitement and mystery. While gamers can now look forward to an official unveiling of the Switch 2 before March 31, 2025, the company remains tight-lipped on specifics — including name, specs, or release date. However, numerous credible leaks and analyst reports suggest the console will be backward compatible, feature upgraded visuals, and may launch as early as late 2024.

The announcement’s timing is especially interesting in light of slowing Switch hardware sales, which Nintendo acknowledged in its recent financial report. With the original Switch now over seven years old, consumer hunger for new hardware is reaching a fever pitch. Competitors Sony and Microsoft have already staked their next-gen claims — and Nintendo seems poised to respond in kind with a device that, if rumors are true, may bridge the performance gap while maintaining its signature hybrid portability.

While fans may be disappointed that the June Nintendo Direct will not address the Switch successor, the presence of major software titles could hint at cross-generation releases, as seen during the transition from Wii U to Switch.

All eyes are now on Nintendo to deliver a reveal worthy of the anticipation. Whatever comes next, it’s clear the Switch era is approaching its final act — and the sequel is waiting in the wings.
