Sony kicked off its June 2024 State of Play with an explosive lineup, headlined by the surprise announcement of a brand-new Astro Bot game. Team Asobi’s quirky platforming hero will return to PlayStation 5 this fall, with a jam-packed adventure that promises to take full advantage of the DualSense controller and next-gen hardware.
The aptly titled *Astro Bot* (a nod to the franchise’s growing brand strength) is set to release on October 8, 2024. In the reveal trailer, fans were treated to a vibrant tour across multiple dimensions—each showcasing different gameplay mechanics, visual themes, and nods to PlayStation’s storied legacy. From a lush jungle filled with robotic wildlife to a neon-lit city straight out of “Wipeout,” the variety of levels suggests Team Asobi is leaning fully into the character’s role as a love letter to the PlayStation universe.
The trailer also showed off new power-ups, including a mechanical dragon suit and magnet-based traversal gloves, signaling some exciting gameplay innovation. Brief glimpses of boss fights and co-op sequences hint that Astro Bot may be Sony’s biggest platforming endeavor yet. The game will remain a PS5 exclusive at launch, with no mention of a PC version for now.
In a post-show developer interview, Creative Director Nicolas Doucet emphasized that this new title is “the biggest adventure [Team Asobi has] undertaken.” He also confirmed the return of Easter eggs referencing classic Sony franchises like *Ratchet & Clank*, *Horizon Zero Dawn*, and *Jak and Daxter*—a feature that turned 2020’s *Astro’s Playroom* into a fan favorite for longtime PlayStation devotees.
With *Astro Bot* positioned as a major first-party release for Sony this year, many are speculating it could do for platformers on PS5 what *Spider-Man 2* did for action-adventure titles in 2023. As the holiday season approaches, Sony appears to be banking on the charm and depth of Astro’s latest expedition to shine among a packed fall lineup.
