Sony delivered a content-rich PlayStation State of Play this May that gave fans a glimpse into the future of the platform, headlined by a deep dive into the long-awaited Silent Hill 2 remake, the surprise return of Astro Bot, and the first major gameplay reveal of Concord. With a mix of thrilling reveals, gameplay showcases, and release windows, PlayStation appears to be gearing up for a packed rest of the year—and beyond.
The show kicked off with a bang as developer Bloober Team unveiled an extended gameplay trailer for Silent Hill 2, highlighting a modernized but faithful approach to the beloved psychological horror classic. The eerie visuals, moody ambiance, and unsettling soundtrack suggest that the remake is staying true to its roots while making smart use of current-gen capabilities on the PS5. Konami confirmed the remake is launching October 8, 2024, and will be exclusive to the PS5 for a one-year window.
The surprises didn’t stop there. Team Asobi made an unexpected splash with the announcement of a brand-new Astro Bot title simply called “Astro Bot.” Launching September 6, 2024, the game expands Astro’s platforming playground into a vast space-faring adventure boasting six galaxies, over 80 levels, and dozens of references to classic PlayStation franchises. From battling giant DualSense-shaped bosses to platforming across familiar game worlds, “Astro Bot” is shaping up to be a celebration of PlayStation history wrapped in a charming and inventive platformer.
Finally, Firewalk Studios unveiled a full gameplay trailer for Concord, their upcoming 5v5 sci-fi shooter, revealing a bright, stylized universe and focusing on team-based firefights reminiscent of Overwatch. Scheduled to release August 23 with a beta this July, Concord emphasized character variety and hero shooter dynamics, though fans seem divided online about how it might stand out in an increasingly crowded genre.
With three major first-party offerings dated for this year, Sony is clearly doubling down on strengthening its software lineup. The May showcase may not have included a megaton like a new Uncharted or God of War tease, but the focus on variety and polish suggests PlayStation is playing the long game.
