In a move that signals a potential shift in Microsoft’s first-party game strategy, Bethesda’s sprawling sci-fi RPG *Starfield* is officially coming to PlayStation 5 later this year. Once marketed as a crown jewel of Xbox exclusivity following Microsoft’s $7.5 billion acquisition of ZeniMax Media in 2021, *Starfield*’s PS5 debut marks a significant pivot by Xbox in response to today’s fast-evolving gaming landscape.
Phil Spencer, CEO of Microsoft Gaming, confirmed the news during a livestreamed Xbox business update this morning. “We’ve been listening to our players, and we’re working to meet them where they are,” said Spencer. “*Starfield* is a game that deserves to be experienced by as many people as possible.”
*Starfield*, launched in September 2023 for Xbox Series X|S and PC, has received mixed but generally favorable reviews for its ambitious interstellar setting and deep crafting systems. However, some fans criticized its lack of innovation and repetitive mission structure. Despite this, it quickly became one of Game Pass’s most-played titles of the year.
Rumors about a PS5 release began swirling in late January, following reports that Microsoft would reassess platform exclusivity on a “case-by-case basis.” Now confirmed, *Starfield* is the first modern Xbox-exclusive AAA title to make the jump to Sony’s platform since the Xbox brand launched more than two decades ago.
Spencer emphasized that this doesn’t spell the end of exclusives for Xbox entirely but instead reflects “a more player-first approach.” Microsoft also announced that upcoming expansions for *Starfield*, including “Shattered Space,” will be available on all platforms simultaneously.
Though no specific release date was provided, sources familiar with Bethesda’s roadmap suggest a late summer 2024 release is likely for the PS5 version. The game is expected to include all current updates and content, alongside support for DualSense features.
This cross-platform push may be the beginning of a new chapter in Xbox’s playbook as pressures mount to grow Game Pass subscription numbers and portfolio reach. For now, PS5 owners have a major sci-fi odyssey to look forward to — an experience once thought permanently locked behind Xbox’s stars.
