Bethesda Game Studios finally lifted the veil on its highly anticipated expansion for Starfield, “Shattered Space,” during this weekend’s Xbox Games Showcase. The sci-fi RPG’s first story DLC will arrive this fall, nearly a year after the base game launched, and fans now have a cinematic — and chilling — glimpse of what’s to come.
The new trailer, which dropped as part of the showcase, leans heavily into atmospheric horror, showcasing abandoned alien structures, supernatural phenomena, and a mysterious cult linked to House Va’ruun — a faction that was largely shrouded in mystery in the base game. Narration echoes over shots of derelict starships and shadowy figures wielding glowing weapons, hinting at a darker, more ominous chapter set in Starfield’s expansive galaxy.
“Shattered Space” marks the first significant content update for Starfield, following months of patches aimed at performance improvements and copious mod support. Bethesda promises the DLC will introduce a new area for players to explore, along with fresh gear, abilities, and a storyline that delves deeper into the more esoteric elements of Starfield’s universe.
Fans have been eager for meaningful narrative additions after the base game’s main story received mixed reviews for its pacing and lack of character depth. The trailer’s emphasis on exploration and mystery seems to be a deliberate play to recapture the magic of Bethesda’s earlier single-player epics like Fallout: New Vegas and Skyrim.
In a post-show update, Bethesda Game Director Todd Howard confirmed that “Shattered Space” will be included for free with the Premium Edition of Starfield and sold separately for standard edition owners. He also teased that this is “just the beginning” of story expansions for the game, with even more content planned into 2025.
Starfield’s “Shattered Space” DLC is currently targeting a Fall 2024 release. As exact dates remain fluid, players should expect more details — and likely another trailer — closer to September. One thing is certain: the stars are aligning for Starfield to make a major comeback this year.
