Bethesda Game Studios has officially unveiled “Shattered Space,” the first major expansion for its sci-fi RPG *Starfield*, slated for release in Fall 2024. Announced during today’s Xbox Games Showcase, the DLC promises to deliver a substantial content update that addresses many fan requests while expanding the game’s universe in significant ways.
According to Bethesda, *Shattered Space* will introduce an entirely new story arc set in a mysterious region of space previously unexplored in the base game. Players can expect new locations, enemies, weapons, and most notably, a deep narrative that delves into House Va’ruun, one of the major factions only loosely touched upon in *Starfield*’s original campaign.
“The response to *Starfield* has been incredible, and with *Shattered Space*, we’re aiming to build on that foundation with a darker, more atmospheric storyline that gives players more of the mystery and high-stakes adventure they’ve been asking for,” said Todd Howard, game director at Bethesda.
In addition to the story expansion, Bethesda also teased a significant overhaul to some core gameplay systems, including updates to ship customization, settlement building, and combat mechanics — features that have been a point of contention among players since launch. While details remain limited, the developer confirmed these tweaks will roll out alongside the expansion, not as a separately priced system update.
*Starfield* released in September 2023 to a mix of praise for its scope and space exploration, and critique for its repetitive quest structure and underdeveloped factions. Anticipation for a robust expansion has been growing steadily, and “Shattered Space” may be Bethesda’s swing at recapturing the ambitious spark that initially drew millions into the Settled Systems.
More details, including gameplay footage and release date specifics, are expected later this summer at QuakeCon 2024. Until then, spacefarers can look forward to returning to the stars with renewed purpose — and possibly encountering dangers far stranger than what’s come before.
