Ubisoft brought the fire to Summer Game Fest week with its June 2024 Ubisoft Forward showcase, lifting the curtain on an enormous slate of upcoming titles anchored by major updates to two hotly anticipated games: Assassin’s Creed Shadows and Star Wars Outlaws.
Leading the charge was a 13-minute gameplay walkthrough for Assassin’s Creed Shadows, giving fans their best look yet at the series’ first full leap into feudal Japan. Set in the late Sengoku period, Shadows introduced dual protagonists—Naoe, a shinobi from Iga Province, and Yasuke, the real-life African samurai who served under Oda Nobunaga. Players will be able to switch between characters freely in a game world described by Ubisoft Quebec as “twice the verticality” of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. The mechanics showcased a thrilling fusion of stealth and action, with Naoe darting across rooftops and utilizing tools like smoke bombs and grappling hooks, while Yasuke brings raw force and brutal katana combat to encounters. Set for release on November 15, 2024, the game has already generated massive buzz online.
Also stealing the spotlight was Star Wars Outlaws, Ubisoft Massive’s open-world Star Wars experience that’s shaping up to be the Han Solo fantasy fans have waited decades for. The showcase featured a new cinematic trailer and over 10 minutes of gameplay footage, revealing protagonist Kay Vess navigating a criminal underworld rife with opportunities and betrayals. Outlaws looks to deliver a seamless transition between ground and space exploration, dynamic faction systems, and bounty-hunting mechanics—all powered by Ubisoft’s Snowdrop engine. It’s officially launching on August 27, 2024.
Beyond the marquee titles, Ubisoft Forward also delivered glimpses into Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora story expansions, updates for The Crew Motorfest, and a surprise announcement of Anno 117: Pax Romana, a city-builder set in the Roman Empire slated for 2025.
With a focus on cinematic storytelling, bold new gameplay directions, and a clear commitment to open-world immersion, Ubisoft appears more ambitious than ever. As the company finally capitalizes on some of its biggest IPs and beloved franchises, fans have plenty to look forward to heading into the second half of the year.
