Xbox Drops Surprise Update for Game Pass, Adds Highly Requested Feature

In a move that’s already shaking up the Xbox community, Microsoft has rolled out a surprise update to Xbox Game Pass, introducing a long-requested feature that bridges the gap between discovery and play: community-curated game lists. The update, which went live earlier today with no prior teaser, is now available across Xbox consoles, PC, and the Game Pass mobile app.

Dubbed “Playlists,” the new feature allows users to create and share custom collections of their favorite titles within the expansive Game Pass library. Think Spotify, but for video games. Whether it’s a list highlighting indie gems, a nostalgic ‘00s throwback bundle, or “Best Games to Beat in a Weekend,” the possibilities are endless—and the community is already jumping in. Users can search for trending playlists, follow curators, and even rate lists, leading to a new layer of engagement within the Game Pass ecosystem.

The feature also integrates directly into the Game Pass UI, meaning players can launch games from a playlist with a single click, making discovery smoother than ever. Xbox’s internal data shows that most users only explore a fraction of the hundreds of games available on the service. This update takes aim at information overload by putting real recommendations from fellow gamers front and center.

In a press release, Xbox Product Manager Carla Jameson stated, “Our community has always been passionate about recommending games to each other. With Playlists, we’re giving that word-of-mouth power a platform to thrive on. We expect this to become one of the most beloved features on Game Pass.”

The update is available now, with Xbox encouraging players to start crafting their own lists and exploring community favorites. Early standouts include “Hidden Horror Gems,” “Perfect Co-op Adventures,” and “Speedrun Darlings.” While Playlists is still in its infancy, the feature represents a clear pivot toward social discovery—as Xbox continues to position Game Pass as not just a subscription service, but a player-driven hub of gaming culture.

With Sony and Nintendo watching closely, today’s update may just be the next must-have feature every platform will try to mimic.
