In a major shift that could redefine the subscription gaming space, Xbox Game Pass is making headlines once again—this time by welcoming an influx of Activision Blizzard titles to its already-stacked library. Following Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard in 2023, fans and analysts alike have anticipated the integration of the publisher’s iconic catalog into Game Pass. As of this week, that transition has commenced, marking a pivotal moment for gamers and industry competitors.
Leading the charge is Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II (2022), now available to Xbox Game Pass subscribers on both console and PC. It’s a historic addition, as Call of Duty games have traditionally remained premium purchases long after launch. Alongside MWII, popular legacy titles such as Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy, Spyro Reignited Trilogy, and Diablo III are also hitting the service in staggered rollouts scheduled over the coming months.
Phil Spencer, CEO of Microsoft Gaming, commented in a blog post, “We’re excited to bring players more value and choice. Game Pass is about enabling more people to play the games they love, and the Activision Blizzard library holds some of gaming’s most beloved franchises.”
This move places even more pressure on Sony and Nintendo, both of whom have yet to respond publicly to the expanding Game Pass lineup. While Sony’s PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium tiers have been bolstered in recent months, neither service currently boasts first-party shooter franchises on par with Call of Duty now being offered through Game Pass.
Consumer response has been overwhelmingly positive, with Game Pass subscription numbers reportedly spiking in recent days. Analysts suggest this integration of Activision Blizzard titles could spark an acceleration in gaming’s ongoing shift toward subscription-based consumption—much like the streaming wars changed television.
As Xbox doubles down on its “play anywhere” ecosystem, these additions not only enhance Game Pass’s value proposition but send a clear message: Microsoft is betting big on content, and it’s inviting gamers to join them for the ride.
