In a major move that reshapes its subscription offerings, Microsoft has announced a series of changes coming to Xbox Game Pass, including a new tiered plan and price increases across existing tiers. The changes are set to roll out beginning in September 2024.

The most notable addition is a new “Standard” Game Pass plan, which will reportedly replace the current Game Pass for Console option. The Standard tier, priced at $14.99 per month, will include access to a library of Game Pass titles but will no longer offer day-one releases — a significant shift from Microsoft’s hallmark feature that made the service a standout among competitors.

Microsoft is also raising prices on its other Game Pass tiers. Xbox Game Pass Ultimate will increase from $16.99 to $19.99 per month, while PC Game Pass will rise from $9.99 to $11.99. These increases come as Microsoft continues to expand its first-party library following high-profile acquisitions, most notably Activision Blizzard, whose titles are expected to appear more prominently in Game Pass moving forward.

In a statement, Microsoft said the pricing changes reflect the increased value offered by Game Pass, citing the upcoming addition of major titles like “Call of Duty: Black Ops 6,” which is confirmed for day-one availability on Game Pass Ultimate. However, the absence of day-one games in the new Standard tier may leave some players reconsidering their subscription level.

Reactions across the community have been mixed. Some players acknowledge the continued value of the Ultimate tier, especially with blockbuster releases still included. Others have expressed frustration over losing day-one access at the base console tier and the growing monthly costs.

While pricing adjustments in the subscription market are not uncommon, Microsoft’s removal of a core feature from its base console plan marks a significant strategic pivot. As the gaming giant eyes higher profitability and broader appeal through a diversified tier system, time will tell whether fans will stick around or look elsewhere in an increasingly competitive subscription landscape.
